Dothan, AL – The Dothan Police Department reported that an Abbeville man has been charged in connection with a fatal overdose that occurred on February 26, 2026.

On that date at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers responded to a medical call at an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Westgate Parkway. The caller reported that a 25-year-old woman, identified as Jakinah Chamique Freeman, was unresponsive while life-saving efforts were underway.

Officers arrived on scene and immediately assisted with emergency medical care alongside Dothan Fire Department paramedics. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

During the initial investigation, officers learned that a black male had been seen running from the residence before first responders arrived. Surveillance footage and witness statements later led investigators to identify the suspect as Danious Da’Kel Sewell, 21, of Abbeville.

Following further investigation and forensic analysis, authorities determined the cause of death was a fentanyl overdose. Investigators allege the man provided the substance that led to the victim’s death.

Sewell was charged with Manslaughter-Fentanyl and booked into the Houston County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
