Dothan, Ala. — As a winter storm approaches Alabama, including the Wiregrass region, authorities are warning residents of the potential dangers posed by snow and ice. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is urging drivers to take extra precautions, with the possibility of up to two inches of snow and icy conditions on the roads.
The ALEA has released a series of safety tips to help motorists stay safe during the inclement weather. They advise drivers to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas where snow and ice are expected to accumulate. If travel is essential, the agency emphasizes the importance of preparing vehicles for the harsh conditions.
“Drivers are advised to ensure their vehicles are winter-ready, which includes checking tires, batteries, wiper blades, and fluid levels,” said an ALEA spokesperson. “An emergency kit containing blankets, snacks, water, and a battery should also be kept in the car.”
For those who must travel, ALEA urges caution on the roads. Drivers are encouraged to reduce their speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid sudden stops, sharp turns, or the use of cruise control. In low visibility conditions, it is also important to use headlights and keep them clean for improved visibility.
Special attention should be paid to bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas, as these locations tend to freeze more quickly than other parts of the roadway. Troopers also advise drivers to obey road closure signs and other warnings posted by authorities.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is particularly concerned about the safety of drivers, as winter weather can be especially challenging in parts of the state that rarely experience such conditions. In the last winter storm, ALEA reported responding to 80 traffic crashes over a two-day period, many of which were influenced by the weather.
“We recognize that winter weather can pose unique challenges for our Alabama communities, particularly in those areas where snow and ice are rare,” said ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. “Our primary goal is to keep our citizens safe. Reducing unnecessary travel during dangerous conditions is crucial to preventing accidents and ensuring first responders can perform their duties efficiently.”
As the storm moves through the state, ALEA continues to encourage residents to stay informed and to take all necessary precautions to stay safe on the roads.
