Dothan, Ala. — Kenny Thompson, Assistant Director of Dothan Leisure Services, has been honored with the 2024 Jim Spain Professional of the Year Award, a distinguished recognition presented annually by the Alabama Recreation and Park Association (ARPA).
The award, which highlights exceptional service, leadership, and involvement in the field of parks and recreation, is unique in that it is only given to professionals who have been nominated by previous award recipients. Thompson’s selection makes him the third individual from Dothan to ever receive this honor, following in the footsteps of Mr. Oates and Ann Rumble, the previous Dothan awardees.
“I’m extremely honored, only the third person from Dothan to ever win. The first person was Mr. Oates, and then Miss Ann Rumble. To be mentioned in their company is just a blessing for sure,” Thompson said upon receiving the award.
Thompson’s career in parks and recreation spans over two decades, during which he has made significant contributions to the community. One of his notable achievements is the establishment of the Dothan Diamond Classic, an event that has become a staple in the area. His leadership and dedication to improving the city’s parks and recreational services have left a lasting impact on the community.
Despite the recognition, Thompson remains focused on continuing to elevate Dothan’s parks and recreation offerings. “The work continues,” he stated. “We hope to expand on our success to make parks and rec better in Dothan.”
Thompson’s award is a testament to the profound influence that dedicated public service professionals like him have on the quality of life in their communities. His recognition not only honors his personal achievements but also reflects the collective effort of the team at Dothan Leisure Services in making the city’s recreational offerings more accessible and enjoyable for residents.
