DOTHAN, Ala. — A Dothan woman has been found guilty of manslaughter in the 2018 stabbing death of her child’s father, Mikel Cummings. Nafessah Thomas, who was originally charged with murder, was convicted following a trial this week.
The tragic incident occurred in November 2018 at the couple’s home on Florida Avenue.
According to prosecutors, Thomas and Cummings, who had a tumultuous relationship, became involved in a heated argument that escalated into violence. As Cummings attempted to return to the house after briefly stepping outside to cool off, Thomas allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife from the counter and stabbed him about four inches in the chest.
Cummings’ mother, Tarsha McIntyre, was present at the time, visiting to help the couple with a move. She recounted the harrowing moment, stating, “She stabbed him in the heart with a knife,” adding that she immediately knew something had gone terribly wrong. The emotional testimony from Cummings’ family painted a picture of a man loved by many.
His cousin, Rosheena Cummings, expressed the family’s desire for justice, saying, “We want justice no matter the circumstances. His life was taken, and she needs to do time for it.” The defense team contended that Thomas acted in self-defense, claiming that Cummings had been the aggressor in the moments leading up to the stabbing.
Thomas took the stand during the trial, telling the court that she had been choked by Cummings just moments before the altercation turned violent. She also argued that she had never been involved in an altercation with him prior to that day, describing their relationship as close, though tumultuous at times. However, the prosecution rejected these claims, pointing to the physical evidence and the testimony of witnesses, including Cummings’ family members.
McIntyre, who was present during the incident, expressed disbelief at Thomas’ defense, stating, “There were a lot of lies on that stand.” Thomas’ defense team further argued that her actions were influenced by years of alleged abuse, citing medical records dating back to 2010. They questioned the nature of the stab wounds, which were horizontal rather than vertical, suggesting that the injuries might not have been inflicted with intent to kill. However, the autopsy report revealed that the knife wound had been directed downward, supporting the prosecution’s argument of intentional harm.
For Cummings’ family, the loss remains devastating. Described as a loving father, a high school graduate, and a generous person who often helped others, Cummings’ death has left a significant void. His relatives expressed their grief, with Rosheena Cummings saying, “We just a big family who loves him so much.”
The case has now concluded with a conviction for manslaughter, but for Cummings’ family, the fight for justice continues as they cope with the loss of a beloved family member.
