ELBA, Ala. — A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday, February 23, in Elba, prompting a swift response from multiple emergency teams. Authorities believe a man took his own life in a vehicle located in the parking lot of the Elba Board of Education.
However, upon arrival, first responders encountered a dangerous situation when they discovered gas leaking from the vehicle.
Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham confirmed that the individual had died from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.
As crews assessed the situation, they were alarmed by a spewing noise coming from the car, which indicated a potential gas leak, requiring immediate attention from specialized teams.
In response, a hazmat team and bomb squad were called in from Dothan to assist with the delicate and hazardous operation.
Their primary focus was to safely handle the hazardous materials and ensure the safety of all involved, including the public.
Woodham noted that, while the tragic death occurred at the Elba Board of Education parking lot, there was no indication that the institution was connected to the incident in any way.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities prioritizing safety as they work to manage the scene.
