HOUSTON COUNTY, Ala. — A man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred last Friday night in Kinsey. Phillip Chavers, 36, of Houston County, is facing multiple charges, including leaving the scene of an accident with death, making a false report, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest. He is currently being held in the Houston County Jail on a $165,000 bond.
The incident took place on February 28, when a vehicle struck 32-year-old Matthew Edward Cook of Griffin, Georgia, along Burdeshaw Road and U.S. 431. Cook was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a truck that fled the area immediately after the collision.
Witnesses who observed the accident were able to capture a photograph of the truck’s license plate and provided it to local authorities. Police tracked the license plate back to the home of Phillip and Carin Chavers. When questioned, Carin Chavers initially claimed she was the driver of the truck at the time of the accident. However, further investigation revealed that she had lied in an effort to protect her husband.
Phillip Chavers was arrested on March 3 and charged with several offenses. The charges include $150,000 for leaving the scene of an accident involving death, $6,000 for making a false report, $6,000 for obstruction of justice, and $3,000 for resisting arrest.
The victim, Matthew Cook, was a resident of Griffin, Georgia. His family has been notified, and they are grieving the loss of their loved one. Police continue to investigate the case, and more details may emerge as the legal process unfolds.
The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability on the road. Local authorities are urging anyone with further information about the case to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
