Dothan Fire Department warns residents open burning requires approved permit, with fires prohibited near neighboring buildings and strict safety rules

Dothan, AL – The Dothan Fire Department is reminding residents that open burning within city limits is restricted and requires an approved burn permit issued by its Fire Prevention Division.

According to the department, approved fires must be at least 50 feet from buildings on the property and 500 feet from buildings on neighboring properties. Weather conditions, including high winds and extremely dry conditions, may also lead to additional burning restrictions.

Permits are not required for cooking fires, barbecues, outdoor fireplaces and heating containers. However, only clean fuel may be burned. Burning garbage, plastics, rubber and other refuse is prohibited.

Residents must also keep a way to extinguish the fire, such as a water hose, within 10 feet of the fire. Fires must never be left unattended.

Anyone planning to burn within Dothan city limits is urged to contact the Fire Prevention Division at 334-615-3500 to request a permit and confirm applicable requirements.
