Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall Announces Bid for U.S. Senate Seat

Dothan,  Ala.— Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall officially announced Thursday that he is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Tommy Tuberville.

Marshall, a Republican, revealed his candidacy through a video featuring several clips of former President Donald Trump introducing or praising him. The video portrayed Marshall as the “senator that our state needs and our president can count on.”

Since his appointment as attorney general in 2017 by then-Governor Robert Bentley, Marshall has become a prominent figure in Alabama politics. He has led efforts alongside other Republican state officials to challenge several policies of the Biden administration through legal action. Additionally, Marshall showed public support for Trump during the former president’s 2024 hush money trial in New York, attending the proceedings and speaking on his behalf.

Among his notable achievements as attorney general, Marshall spearheaded Alabama’s adoption of nitrogen gas as a method of execution. In 2024, Alabama became the first state to carry out a death sentence using this new method.

The Senate seat opened when Tuberville announced on Tuesday that he will seek the governorship in 2026 instead of pursuing a second term in the Senate. The vacancy is expected to attract a crowded field of candidates.

Marshall has been elected attorney general twice, securing a full term in 2018 and winning re-election in 2022. Due to term limits, he is ineligible to run for the office again. Before serving as attorney general, Marshall spent 16 years as the district attorney of Marshall County. Originally elected as a Democrat, he switched to the Republican Party in 2011.

In a notable development last year, Marshall declared he would not enter the 2026 governor’s race, a decision that now sets the stage for his Senate campaign.

As Alabama prepares for what is shaping up to be a highly contested Senate race, Steve Marshall positions himself as a conservative stalwart with strong ties to former President Trump and a record of assertive legal challenges against the federal government.
