Community Mourns the Loss of Former Deputy Scott Spivey

DOTHAN, Ala. — The community of Houston County is grieving after the tragic death of former deputy Scott Spivey, whose body was found Friday night on County Road 33 in the Hodgesville Community. Authorities are investigating the incident, which is believed to be a possible hit-and-run, though no official details have been released. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the cause of death.

Spivey, who served as a deputy with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office until his departure in 2014, was well known within the local community for his dedication to service and his involvement in faith-based recovery programs. He was a respected member of Westgate Church of Christ, where he had built strong relationships with many, including Jason Johnson, a fellow church member.

Johnson, who knew Spivey through the church’s Transform Central program, expressed his grief and disbelief over the loss. “To just be hit, left for dead to die on that road alone… it’s just tragic,” Johnson said. The Transform Central program provides support to men recovering from addiction or incarceration, offering them a place to stay and guidance in building a relationship with Christ.

Spivey was more than just a church member—he was a leader. Johnson described him as someone who was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether it was offering prayer, assisting with financial needs, or providing rides to those in need. “He sought to help the men through their struggles, be with them in prayer, financial needs, and even if they needed a ride,” Johnson said.

The loss of Spivey has left a hole in the hearts of his church family. Westgate Church of Christ has extended its prayers and support to Spivey’s family during this difficult time. “I had just said in my sermon yesterday of how he served in our community as a part of the sheriff’s office and probably patrolled that area many times, ensuring protection and security for those who lived in that area,” said the church’s pastor.

While authorities have not yet confirmed the details of the incident, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case. The possibility of a hit-and-run or foul play is being considered as investigators work to uncover the circumstances surrounding Spivey’s death.

The church staff remains committed to supporting Spivey’s family and the community, offering comfort and strength in the wake of this heartbreaking loss. The investigation continues, and the community awaits answers as they remember a man who dedicated much of his life to serving others.
