Dothan City Schools Begin Strategic Planning for Future

DOTHAN, Ala. – Dothan City Schools (DCS) is embarking on a new phase of its strategic planning process, with the goal of building a stronger educational foundation for students. A steering committee gathered recently to kick off the planning, emphasizing the importance of unity in shaping the district’s future.

DCS engages in this planning process every five years to develop a roadmap for the district’s mission and vision. This year, the district has partnered with Education Elements, a consulting firm, to guide the effort. Angela Jones, a representative of Education Elements, explained that the committee’s work focuses on evaluating the “straws, sticks, and bricks” that currently make up the organization—elements that will help guide future improvements.

The planning session centered on key areas such as curriculum, leadership, and engagement. Participants, including parents, students, community partners, and educators, reflected on the successes and challenges from previous years in order to find common ground and pave the way forward.

Aurie Jenkins, a member of the Dothan School Board, emphasized the importance of working together as a cohesive unit. “If we’re not working together and on the same path, no change is going to happen,” Jenkins stated. “We’re stronger as a team.”

One of the committee’s key takeaways was the recognition that the public perception of DCS could be improved. In response, the district is committed to making positive changes to how it is viewed within the community.

The next phase of the planning process involves community engagement. A survey will be sent out on February 11 to gather feedback and suggestions from the community on ways DCS can improve and better serve its students. This effort highlights the district’s commitment to involving all stakeholders in the decision-making process and ensuring that the path forward reflects the needs and desires of the entire community.

As the planning process continues, Dothan City Schools remains focused on creating a more unified and successful educational experience for its students.
