DOTHAN, Ala. — The Dothan City Board of Education announced the five finalists for the district’s next superintendent during a special meeting Thursday afternoon.
The candidates were selected from a competitive pool of approximately 42 applicants, 31 of whom completed the full application process. Applicants represented a wide geographic range, including educators from Alabama, Georgia, New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, Virginia, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
The finalists are:
Dr. Donnie Chambers, a principal within Houston County Schools with 19 years of experience in Dothan City Schools.
Dr. Garrick Askew, the current assistant superintendent of Clark County Schools in Athens, Georgia.
Dr. Veronica Bayles, an educator from Tuscaloosa County.
Dr. Charles Corbitt, Dothan City Schools Director of Student Services, who has served in multiple roles including teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal.
Dr. Kari McGann, superintendent of the Flemington-Raritan Regional School District in New Jersey.
The superintendent search began earlier this year after Dr. Dennis Coe announced he would step down following the expiration of his contract in June.
Board of Education members expressed optimism about the depth of experience and leadership qualities each finalist brings to the table, emphasizing the importance of finding a superintendent who can continue to advance the district’s goals and support its students and staff.
The board is expected to conduct interviews and community engagement sessions in the coming weeks before making a final decision.
