DOTHAN, Ala. — The Houston County Commission is working to secure additional funding for the transformation of the Houston County Farm Center, aiming to enhance the facility with a fully equipped kitchen to serve future visitors. This addition is part of a broader effort to create a multi-purpose space that will accommodate a variety of community events, including a farmers market.
To help fund the kitchen and other improvements, the county is applying for a Community Block Development Grant. While the specific amount of the grant remains undetermined, Commission Chairman Brandon Shoupe expressed optimism about the financial boost it would provide to the project.
“The grant will help tremendously with the kitchen and other necessary improvements, making the center more functional for the community,” Shoupe said.
Construction on the farm center is progressing steadily, with the roof of the arena already completed. However, some unexpected structural concerns were discovered during demolition, prompting the county to bring in a structural engineer for further assessment. While the implications of these findings are still unclear, officials are confident the project will remain on track.
“We’re taking the necessary steps to address any issues that arise, but overall, the project is moving forward as planned,” Shoupe added.
Once completed, the Houston County Farm Center will serve as a versatile venue for a wide range of activities, from local markets to community events. The inclusion of a kitchen area will allow for catering, food preparation, and other culinary activities, making it an even more attractive location for gatherings and events.
The Houston County Commission is hopeful that the grant application will provide the financial support needed to complete these essential upgrades and create a valuable resource for the community.
