DOTHAN, Ala. – Although the winter storm has passed, the effects are still being felt across Henry County as hazardous road conditions persist. Officials are urging residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary as the region navigates day three of icy weather.
Chad Sowell, director of Henry County 9-1-1, issued a warning to motorists, emphasizing the dangers of traveling on icy roads. “No matter how confident you are in your driving abilities, ice will make you crash,” Sowell stated. “We want to make people aware that many roads, especially in low-lying areas and on bridges, are still covered with ice, and in some areas, snow remains.”
The county has seen multiple incidents of stranded vehicles, which are complicating efforts by first responders to reach the scenes of motor vehicle accidents. Video footage from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office showed slick, treacherous road conditions on Thursday, underscoring the dangerous travel conditions.
State Highway 134 East, heading out of Headland, was closed early Thursday morning due to ice on bridges near the Headland Country Club. In addition, reports indicated that an 18-wheeler had become stranded on State Highway 10 West and County Road 25, blocking both lanes and further hindering traffic flow.
As the cold temperatures persist, residents are advised to stay home if they do not need to travel. “Please, if you don’t have to be out on the roads, stay home,” Sowell urged. Local authorities are continuing to monitor road conditions and advise caution for those who must be on the roadways.
