ELBA, Ala. — A man convicted in the 2020 shooting death of a homeowner during a violent home invasion has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to murder.

Court records reveal that Juron Waldon, 27, entered the guilty plea on Wednesday in connection with the fatal shooting of Donta Rogers, who was killed inside his mobile home in Elba, Alabama, on January 5, 2020. Waldon was arrested shortly after the incident, which took place when he broke into Rogers’ home and shot him with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Under the terms of his sentencing, Waldon will receive credit for the 525 days he spent in jail following his arrest, though he will still be required to serve the remaining time in state prison.

The case shocked the small community of Elba, which had been left grappling with the loss of a life in such a violent manner. Local authorities confirmed that Waldon’s actions were part of a targeted burglary that escalated into the fatal shooting of Rogers, but details of the motive remain unclear.

The victim’s family expressed relief at the resolution of the case, but they continue to mourn the loss of their loved one. The community has also rallied around the Rogers family, offering support during this difficult time.

Waldon, who was facing additional charges at the time of his arrest, is now expected to serve the full 20-year sentence in a state prison. His guilty plea marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing effort for justice in this tragic incident.
