DOTHAN, Ala. — A serious accident occurred early Monday morning when a Greyhound bus collided with a pickup truck hauling cows near the intersection of Highway 231 and Smithville Road. The crash, which took place shortly before 8:00 a.m., left several people injured and caused significant disruption to local traffic.
According to reports, the Greyhound bus, carrying over 25 passengers, was traveling down Highway 231 when it crashed into the driver’s side of the pickup truck. The truck, which was towing a cattle trailer containing five cows, was struck with enough force to cause injuries to five individuals on the bus. One passenger is reported to have sustained extensive injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Despite the severity of the crash, the cows in the trailer appeared unharmed. Dothan Livestock and Auction responded to the scene, helping transfer the cattle onto another trailer.
In the aftermath of the collision, approximately 25 Greyhound passengers were left standing by the side of the road in the chilly 41-degree weather. Memphis Baptist Church quickly dispatched its church bus to assist the stranded travelers, providing them with a warm, safe ride.
Emergency responders from various local agencies were quick to arrive at the scene, including the Houston County Sheriff’s Deputies, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the Hodgesville Volunteer Fire Department, Rehobeth Fire-Rescue, and several other rescue teams from nearby areas. The Alabama State Troopers are currently leading the investigation into the cause of the crash.
The Greyhound bus stop in Dothan is located at the Flying J Travel Center, and the nearest stop outside of the city is in Montgomery. Local authorities have urged travelers to remain cautious while the investigation continues.
