Space Command Headquarters Move to Huntsville Nears Decision

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The decision to relocate the United States Space Command headquarters to Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal could be finalized within weeks, according to Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL).

A recent report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) criticized the current posture of Space Command in Colorado as unsuitable for the long term, adding momentum to efforts advocating for the move. However, Colorado lawmakers have vowed to oppose the relocation.

Rep. Aderholt emphasized the strategic importance of the move, linking it to President Donald Trump’s missile defense initiative, known as Golden Dome. “Without Space Command, President Trump really can’t move forward in a meaningful way with Golden Dome,” Aderholt said. “Getting this to Huntsville, getting this set up, I think it is imperative for the President’s mission with Golden Dome to move forward.”

Aderholt said he and fellow Alabama lawmakers maintain close communication with the White House on the matter. “We feel like the President made that commitment to move Space Command from Colorado, and it wasn’t a political decision. It was a decision based on the facts,” he added.

State Representative Andy Whitt (R-Harvest) echoed this sentiment, highlighting Huntsville’s established reputation in space exploration and the defense industry. “Huntsville is known for its legacy in space exploration, its rockets, and the aerospace industry,” Whitt said. “But, with our current innovation with the defense industry here in Huntsville, it’s just a natural fit.”

Whitt pointed out that Huntsville is well prepared for the relocation, noting the city’s robust network of more than 400 defense contractors ready to support the mission. He predicted the move would bring significant job growth and economic benefits to the region. “We’re very excited about it. I think it will bring jobs, an economic boom here for the town,” Whitt said.

While the decision ultimately rests with President Trump, Rep. Aderholt encouraged residents and stakeholders to stay tuned as the situation develops.
