DOTHAN, Ala. — Two cities in Houston County are set to benefit from millions in state funding aimed at improving traffic flow and safety at key intersections. The Alabama Department of Transportation announced that the city of Dothan will receive $2 million in state funds, in addition to $3.86 million in local funding, to enhance the intersection of Highway 84 and Flowers Chapel Road. Planned improvements include a new connector road and a roundabout designed to alleviate congestion in the busy area.
Ashford will also receive a $2 million allocation from the state for improvements at the intersection of Highway 84 and Broadway Street. Both projects are part of a broader initiative to address transportation needs across the state.
In total, the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II) has awarded $40 million in funding for similar road and bridge projects across 18 cities in the state. These funds will support 24 projects designed to improve infrastructure and safety on Alabama’s roadways.
Governor Kay Ivey expressed her pride in the progress of the Rebuild Alabama initiative, which has funded hundreds of road and bridge projects throughout the state since its creation in 2019. “Rebuild Alabama has helped make us stronger as we have broken ground on hundreds of road and bridge projects all across the state,” Governor Ivey said. “We have projects improving Alabama in all 67 counties, but our job is not finished, and we are not slowing down now!”
The ATRIP-II program was established under the Rebuild Alabama Act to provide state and local governments with funds for road and bridge improvements. With these new investments in Dothan and Ashford, officials are hopeful that the improvements will ease traffic congestion and enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
As the projects move forward, local residents and commuters can expect smoother traffic flow and safer intersections as part of Alabama’s ongoing efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure.
