DOTHAN, Ala. — A devastating crash near the Alabama-Florida line on Thursday claimed the lives of three children. The collision occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m. on Highway 79, south of Bonifay, Florida.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident began when a 24-year-old woman from Georgia, driving an SUV, was heading north on Highway 79. The SUV was struck from behind by a Ford pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old man from Alabama. The force of the impact caused both vehicles to veer off the roadway before they crashed into a dirt embankment. The SUV continued its path, slamming into a tree before finally overturning onto its left side.
Two children in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. A third child was rushed to Bay Medical Hospital but later succumbed to injuries. The identities of the children have not been released pending notification of their families.
In addition to the three children, a fourth child and two adults, including the Georgia woman, were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The conditions of the other passengers have not been disclosed by authorities.
The driver of the pickup truck, a man from Alabama, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Authorities have not released further details about the cause of the collision, and the Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the tragic incident.
