Winter Storm Blankets Wiregrass Region in Snow

Dothan, Ala. — A rare winter storm swept through the Wiregrass region on Tuesday, covering Geneva County in a blanket of snow. The storm, which brought an unexpected layer of white to the area, had residents of Hartford and surrounding communities braving the chilly temperatures to take in the rare sight.

In Hartford, two teens were spotted in the town square making snow angels, a sign of the community’s excitement over the sudden snowfall. Local residents Hilburn and Wendy Stanley spoke with WDHN, sharing their surprise and delight at the storm. “It’s pretty cool. It has been a long time, like since nineteen seventy-something since it was this much,” Hilburn remarked, hinting at the long history of infrequent snowfalls in the area. Wendy added, “I was really excited this time,” emphasizing the unusual nature of the winter event.

By Tuesday afternoon, the storm had left East Roehlig Street in Hartford completely frozen and buried under snow, creating hazardous conditions for drivers. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, the sight of snow covering homes and streets in Hartford brought a sense of wonder to many residents.

Meanwhile, in Geneva, children were spotted sledding down the levee behind the Geneva County Courthouse, taking full advantage of the rare snow day. The new city hall in Geneva was also covered in a pristine layer of snow, adding to the picturesque winter scene that had taken over the town.

The winter storm left a lasting impression on the Wiregrass region, reminding residents of how infrequent, yet beautiful, snowfall can be in this part of Alabama.
