Dothan, AL – A Dothan man was arrested Thursday after officers investigating a suspicious person call connected him to multiple vehicle break-ins and the theft of an air conditioning unit, according to the Dothan Police Department.
On May 22, 2026, officers responded to the 1400 block of Headland Avenue after a caller reported a suspicious person at a business. The caller told dispatchers the business’ outside air conditioning unit had been stolen on May 18 and believed the person responsible had returned to the property after reviewing surveillance video.
When officers arrived, they made contact with 42-year-old Jonhas Smith of Dothan. The responding officer had also handled the original theft report on May 18 and recognized Smith as the suspect seen in the surveillance footage. Investigators also identified Smith as a suspect in several other recent crimes.
According to police, the investigation revealed Smith was responsible for multiple vehicle break-ins on May 19 in the 100 block of Ross Clark Circle, the 200 block of Ross Clark Circle, the 500 block of Bic Road, and at a business in the 1800 block of Reeves Street. Investigators also linked Smith to the theft of the air conditioning unit.
Police said Smith was additionally connected to vehicle break-ins in the 2200 block of Montgomery Highway on May 6.
Smith was arrested and charged with 35 counts of unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle along with several outstanding warrants. He was booked into the Houston County Jail on bonds totaling $87,500.
Additional charges are possible, according to police.
